What the best way is to clean your sex toys? Common question. And I am here to tell you that toy cleaning doesn't have to be all that complicated. I am also here to tell you that UVC light is a valid option for those who want their toys to be squeaky clean.
What Kind of Toys?
First let me be clear that I am referring to only 100% silicone, non-porous toys, including ones that contain electronics for vibration or movement. Please remember that most toys containing electronics cannot be submerged, only wiped down or carefully washed, avoiding charging inlets. Follow the directions on the toy you have to avoid damaging it while cleaning.
Are Toy Cleaners Necessary?
While there are many different toy cleaners on the market, I do not believe they are all that necessary (this does not benefit me financially). There are discussions about pH and the suitability for mucous membrane or delicate areas of your body. But once you clean a toy with warm water and hand soap, and then wipe it down with alcohol, no significant residue is left. The alcohol evaporates and you're fine.
Doesn't Smell Clean
Toys that are 100% silicone can indeed hold an odor after anal use, even after careful cleaning. When a toy doesn't smell good, it's hard to believe it's actually clean. There are 2 ways of removing odors, detailed here, for toys with electronics and without.
What About the Germs?
We've addressed pH and scent, but what about the important stuff, like bacteria and germs? After wiping a silicone toy down with alcohol, it is still possible for there to be HPV. According to this study, HPV was detected on 44% of 100% silicone toys immediately after cleaning with 'a commercially available cleaner'. The study did show that none of the silicone toys tested positive for HPV 24 hours later, however. So theoretically, after you clean your toys, don't use them until 24 hours has passed and they should be fine, right? Yes, but this was a small study (9) with an unnamed cleaning solution containing unknown ingredients.
If you want that added level of assurance that your toys are squeaky clean, and don't want to leave anything to chance, I suggest UVC light. Why do I recommend it?
